Barcode labels for products, stock and shipments

A barcode label only earns its place if it scans the first time at the checkout, the warehouse shelf or the loading dock. That comes down to artwork prepared at the right size, enough contrast, and a label material suited to where the code will live. Barcode labels on this page come in rectangular, square, round and die cut formats, with room for your logo, product name or storage details alongside the code.

Common uses

  • Retail products that need a scannable code at the point of sale
  • Warehouse bins, shelving and pallet locations
  • Stocktakes and internal inventory tracking
  • Equipment and asset identification in offices and schools
  • Outgoing cartons that need a dispatch reference

Preparing your barcodes

The barcode numbers themselves are supplied by you, so settle which numbering system your retailers accept before building the artwork. Send each code as a vector file where possible, keep the blank quiet zone on either side of the bars, and avoid shrinking a code below the size your scanner or retailer recommends. For runs where every label needs a different code or a sequential number, attach the list as a spreadsheet and ask whether that can be done for your order.

Choosing the label material

Think about the conditions first. Dry retail shelves call for different stock from cool rooms, freezers or wash-down areas. Paper labels are a common starting point for dry indoor products, while waterproof labels and vinyl labels are worth comparing where moisture is involved. If codes are applied from a dispenser, look at roll labels. Describe the setting and a stock will be suggested with your quote.

How ordering works

Send your label size, quantity, barcode files and any extra text through the quotation request. Free design support can arrange the code, logo and wording on the label so nothing crowds the bars. Before printing, you receive a PDF proof by email; print it at full scale and scan it with your own equipment before signing off. There are no die or plate charges, and shipping is free.

Questions

Barcode Labels FAQs

Where do I get the barcode numbers for my product labels?

Barcode numbers come from you rather than from the printer. If you sell through supermarkets or large retailers, they will usually expect registered numbers from the official barcode numbering body, so ask your buyer what they accept before creating artwork. For internal stock or asset tracking, your own inventory system can generate the codes.

Will my barcode scan once it is printed?

Scanning depends on the size of the code, the blank margin either side of the bars, the contrast between bars and background, and the label material. Supply each barcode as a vector file at its intended size, keep dark bars on a light background, and print your PDF proof at full scale to test with your own scanner before approving.

Can each label carry a different barcode or serial number?

Tell us if you need variable data such as unique barcodes or sequential numbering. Say how many different codes are involved and attach them as a spreadsheet with your quote request. We will confirm in the quote whether your job can be printed that way and how the file should be laid out.

What conditions should I mention for barcode labels in cool rooms or freezers?

Say whether labels go onto cold or damp surfaces, get handled with wet gloves, or sit in wash-down areas, and what they stick to, such as cardboard, plastic tubs or metal shelving. Cold and moisture change which material and adhesive make sense, so describe the setting and a suitable option will be recommended.
